Printworks shares a hint in their post, announcing “The Final Season”
Surrey Quays nightclub Printworks has shared a cryptic post on Instagram hinting at its imminent closure, despite reports that it would be reopening again following a haitus to redevelop the site.
Printworks’ official Instagram page shared a black and white graphic earlier today (November 17) that reads: “2016-2023”, with the caption “Link in bio.”
The link in bio leads to a sign-up page for the venue’s “Final Season.”
Earlier this year, it was reported that owners Broadwick Live had reached an agreement with the site’s operators British Land to allow the planned redevelopment of the former printing press into an office and entertainment space.
The 6,000-capacity venue, which opened in January 2017, had reportedly “always” been intended as a temporary space to aid development to the Surrey Quays area. Last year plans were uncovered for a “sustainable office-led redevelopment” of the Printworks building.
Southwark Council confirmed it had given a green light to the plans in July 2022, however London Night Czar Amy Lamé told Mixmag the in July that Printworks may not be closing after all — highlighting talks with Broadwick Live and British Land.
Broadwick Live shared a statement in September confirming that it was in “detailed talks” to maintain a venue within the new development, but had been instructed that it will have to close “for a number of years” in 2023, to allow changes to go ahead.
“While there is still a detailed planning process that needs to take place before we can 100% confirm our return, we’re now further along in this process than we have been for some time,” Broadwick Live told Mixmag.
“At this point, we can confirm that the venue will close at some point in the New Year, for a number of years during a period of modernisation as planned. As a team we are committed to preserving the essence of the iconic Press Halls and retaining the spirit of Printworks for our return.”
