Back in 1994 a new phenomena was born, in the southwestern part of Germany. 20 years ago, the city of Mannheim at that time probably did expect that, in the near future Techno ravers Worldwide would assimilate the name of the city with iconic Time Warp Festival. Without a doubt, this is the place to be when it comes to Techno! Line-up filled with DJ’s which will literally blow you away with 24hrs of top-notch, 100% raw and heavy Techno. Time Warp has stood as the frontier Techno festival for over 20 years now, with quality music, supreme sound, luster visuals and enigmatic location. It comes as no surprise that it is included in Pulseradio, InTheMix and other online magazines, as One of the festivals to discover before you die.
It all started back on the 26th, November, 1994. The date when the first Time Warp took place. The first edition of the festival was actually held at “Walzmhüle, in the city of Ludwigshafen (opposite side of Mannheim, separated by the river Rhine). The first edition of the festival was attended by around 2000 Techno fans, making history as the first attendees of what was to become a legend in the Techno scene. Since the very beginning, Time Warp had one goal, to deliver a quality line-up and outstanding music.
Next year in 1995, the festival changed locations and moved to “Maimarkthalle” in the city of Mannheim. The place which become home to the Time Warp family, and as to date has held all the annual Time Warp events for since 1995 (for now 20, we wish them the least another 20). The first edition taking place in Mannheim, was also the first time Sven Väth’s first appearance and since then he has attended and played at every single edition of Time Warp (true legend). The event was attended by over 10 000 visitors, attracted by the great line-up including, Sven Väth, Carl Cox, Josh Wink, Laurent Garnier, Juan Atkins, Richie Hawtin and a live act by Cosmic Baby.
Time Warp Worldwide
In 2005 for the first time in its history, Time Warp was held outside of Germany. The event was held in Prague, Czech Republic. The line-up included the regulars Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, as well as Mauro Picotto, Tiefschwarz, Marco V, Ruby, Quintin, Spyro and many others. The event was the start of the international expansion of Time Warp with parties organized abroad in different countries such as Holland (Rotterdam), Vien (Austria), Italy (Milano), and in 2014 the big overseas jump to Argentine (Buenos Aires) and USA (New York).
But home is always home and Time Warp has proven to become a very important part of the city of Mannheim. When the city celebrated its 400th anniversary back in 2007, Time Warp was honored and was officially part of the celebrations. That very same year, Time Warp expanded onto a 7 day festival called, “International Festival for Jetzmusic and Media Arts”. For those 7 days, the World of Electronic Music and Media Arts was all seeded in Mannheim. The event offered various exhibitions, live concerts, and plenty of workshops for music, media and arts.
What to expect at Time Warp
In 2005 the “colours of rhythm” concept was introduced and extended. From there, three event-zones composed the basis of Time Warp as well as subjects like art and media. In addition, the important first steps towards a multi-day festival were taken. The year 2005 also saw the launch of three separated festival divisions: blue for main event, red for Labelcamp and green, an area for miscellaneous events and presentations.
In 2014 and 2015 Time Warp traveled far away to North and South America, throwing memorable parties in Brooklyn, NYC, US and Costa Salguero, Buenos Aires, Argentine. In 2015 Time Warp will return to Buenos Aires on the 17/18th of April, right after the main event in Mannheim on the 5th of April with a line-up of 40 top class DJ’s. One thing is for sure, this Easter will something special! For any updates and information about this year’s events and lineup go to Time Warp’s Official Website.
